The most successful day traders began with a good, working knowledge of the stock market, develop a sensible and stable strategy, and work with the flow of the market to generate a profit. This is the only way to make money.

The following are the key concepts which any investor needs to know before beginning in day trading on the stock market.

Capital Funds

The first thing an investor must do is amass enough funds to be able to effectively trade in stocks which will produce a profit. Plan on having a minimum of $5000 saved up but realize that a typical day, there could be opportunities to spend $50,000. For those day traders without these amounts, position sizing allows for a smaller investment to be used on less trades.

The return on investment depends largely on the risk level of the trades. Average yield for day traders ranges anywhere from 50 to 100 percent (for longer holds).

The Learning Curve

How long it takes to realize a profit on the stock market relies largely on the investor himself. In a successful trade, 20% is attributed to the trade itself and 80% is due to the day trader’s expertise.

Personal Attributes

Because each individual varies in their dedication, willingness to learn, and risk-taking ability, no two investors will ever have the same portfolio or return on investment.

Discipline is a large component of success. The best day traders select an effective strategy and then stick with it. Part of this formula is also patience along with a good dose of courage and determination. Successful day traders treat their foray into the stock market as a business, and not just a hobby.

Beware of Pitfalls

Even successful day traders experience a variety of pitfalls, some beyond their control. Particularly with today’s technology and access to trading on the internet, many mistakes occur because of a lag in internet access, a computer system with insufficient memory or speed, or a delay in real time data.

The only way to realize a good profit from day trading in the stock market is by developing your own skills to create an advantage. Ensure that you have the necessary funding, tools, personal attributes, and knowledge of the market before expecting success as a day trader.
